A WHOLE-PERSON LENS
Recognized late, or never?
Many adults only see ADHD clearly later in life. Culture and family expectations shape how it was understood, or missed. We’ll look at that history with care.
Understanding ADHD in adults
More than attention
ADHD affects how attention is regulated, not just how much of it you have. It also affects executive functions like planning, starting and finishing tasks, managing time, and holding information in mind, and it often affects emotional regulation. Many adults with ADHD can focus intensely on things that interest them, which is part of why it’s so often misunderstood.
Why it’s often missed
Many adults weren’t recognized as children, especially if they did well in school, were quiet, or built coping strategies like overworking or last-minute adrenaline. ADHD can also be mistaken for anxiety or depression, and it often occurs alongside them.
Assessment
If you’re wondering whether you have ADHD, an assessment can bring clarity. Adult assessments typically include a detailed conversation about your history and current life, standardized questionnaires, and sometimes input from someone who knows you well. We don’t provide assessments ourselves, but we have trusted, reliable referrals for testing and can share them during your free consult.
What therapy looks like
We build practical systems for time, tasks, and follow-through that fit how your brain works. We also work on emotional ups and downs, relationships, and the shame many adults carry after years of being called lazy or careless. If you take or are considering medication, we can coordinate with your prescriber.
ADHD and emotions
Many adults with ADHD feel emotions quickly and intensely, and some are especially sensitive to criticism or rejection. These reactions are often part of how ADHD affects regulation, not a character flaw. Therapy can help you notice the build-up earlier, recover faster, and explain what’s happening to the people close to you.
ADHD at work and at home
Common struggles include unfinished projects, missed deadlines, clutter, unpaid bills, and uneven household roles. Rather than a long list of productivity tips, we focus on the few systems that make the biggest difference for you.
When to reach out
If you keep running into the same walls at work, at home, or in relationships despite trying hard, or if you’re exhausted from compensating, it’s worth talking to someone. You don’t need a diagnosis to start, and you don’t need to have it all figured out.
