Private pay therapy in Illinois — another way to start.

Private pay is one of the ways to pay for therapy at TCC. You and your therapist decide together how often to meet and how long to continue, and nothing is billed to an insurer unless you choose to submit a superbill. Whether you pay privately or use insurance, you get the same therapists, the same approach and the same care.

Session rates

Clear rates, set before you start

ServiceIntakeOngoing
Individual therapy$195$175
Couples & partners therapy$195$220

These are the same rates listed on our Fees & insurance page. Without insurance, cost can still be a barrier. Each therapist holds a limited number of reduced-fee spots, so ask about availability.

Third culture counseling

Let’s make room for the whole story

Some experiences take time to unpack, like growing up between countries, being sent away to school young, or a couple bridging two families and two cultures. With private pay, you and your therapist set the pace together.

Out-of-network reimbursement

Using your out-of-network benefits

  1. 1

    Check your benefits

Call the number on your insurance card and ask:

    • Do I have out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits?
    • What’s my deductible?
    • What percentage is reimbursed?
    • Is telehealth covered?
    • If relevant, is couples therapy covered?
  2. 2

    Pay TCC directly

Pay for each session at the time of service.

  3. 3

    Get your superbill

TCC provides superbills through Sessions Health. A superbill is an itemized receipt with the codes insurers ask for, which typically includes a diagnosis.

  4. 4

    Submit it to your insurer

Send the superbill to your plan for possible reimbursement.

Reimbursement depends entirely on your plan and isn’t guaranteed. Some plans treat couples therapy differently from individual therapy, so it’s worth asking about it specifically.

HSA & FSA

Paying with HSA or FSA

TCC accepts HSA and FSA cards. Whether a card is approved depends on your plan administrator and card issuer, so we can’t promise every card will go through. If you’re unsure, check with your plan before your first session.

No Surprises Act

Your right to a Good Faith Estimate

If you aren’t using insurance, or choose not to submit a claim, you have the right to a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges before care begins. You’ll receive one before your first appointment, and you can request one at any time. If your bill is at least $400 more than your estimate, you can dispute it.
