A WHOLE-PERSON LENS
Not all trauma looks like one big event
Discrimination, religious or family pressure, migration, boarding-school separation, and growing up in survival mode can all leave lasting marks. Your experience counts, whether or not it fits a textbook definition.
Understanding trauma
What counts as trauma
Trauma is defined less by the event itself and more by how it affected you. It can follow a single event, like an assault or an accident, or build up over time through neglect, abuse, discrimination, or growing up in an unpredictable home. What these have in common is that your nervous system learned the world wasn’t safe.
How trauma can show up later
Intrusive memories or flashbacks, feeling on guard or easily startled, numbness, trouble trusting people, shame, avoiding reminders, and reactions that feel bigger than the moment. Many people don’t connect these to past experiences at first.
Safety comes first
Trauma therapy should never feel like being thrown back into the worst moments. We begin by building stability: grounding skills, a sense of safety in our sessions, and ways to manage triggers. Only when you’re ready do we look more closely at what happened, and you decide how much to share.
Trauma, culture, and identity
Racism, homophobia, religious harm, migration, and war can all leave lasting effects that standard approaches sometimes miss. Your experiences will be understood in their full context, including the strengths that helped you survive.
Complex trauma
When harm happened repeatedly, especially in childhood or in close relationships, it can shape how you see yourself, handle emotions, and relate to others. This is sometimes called complex trauma. Healing often focuses as much on the present, building safety, self-trust, and steady relationships, as on the past. You may also find the attachment and emotional neglect page helpful.
What healing can look like
Healing doesn’t mean forgetting. It usually means memories lose some of their charge, your body feels safe more of the time, and you have more choice in how you respond. Many people also find more room for connection, rest, and joy.
When to reach out
If the past keeps showing up in the present, through nightmares, panic, numbness, conflict in relationships, or a constant sense of danger, it may be time to get support. It doesn’t matter how long ago it happened or whether you think it was “bad enough.” If it still affects you, it deserves care.
